This time around, a thick white blanket

I'd say 5, possibly 6 inches of new snow.

The view from my office.  For which I'm eternally grateful.  Believe me, after years of mid-city high rise office building cubicles, small city freezing metal building manufacturing company, various cheek by jowl desk arrangements for a host of companies from marketing to merchandising, and even 5 years in a hospital closet office (yes truly it was literally a closet), every single day I enjoy working from my balcony and embrace the panorama before me.

Third star is assembled.  I'm busy cutting up kits for the rest.  Lots of fabric to starch yet, but it's okay, I won't be traveling anywhere until everything melts.

Ooops, I spoke too soon . . .

The snow is back.

 I'd say 3 or 4 inches.

 It's very pretty; however . . .

I'm very glad I don't have to drive today.

 Especially since I'd rather work on these.

The third block is ready to go.  Notice how I'm mixing print scale and pattern.

I think it makes for a more interesting visual experience.  Kinda like enjoying milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and mint chocolate all from the same box.

If you're experiencing a wintry mix, please be sure to salt your steps, as well as your elderly neighbor's.  It's much easier than an ER visit.

The excitement is palpable.

Not only has all the snow melted,

But I took time out last night to work on a new project.  

The process is simple using the Easy Angle ruler and 4 inch strips.

I cannot wait to get the twelve, 12-inch squares done.

The total renovation of the sewing room has yielded some interesting finds.

2 baggies of 16 patch blocks intended for a project in 2000, several baggies of 1930s 4-patches, and a basket full of leftover white/muslin strips in varying widths.

After seeing the lovely quilt on Carol's blog, ideas started coalescing and a new quilt top was born.

I started starching and trimming last Thursday.  A marathon of sewing on Saturday and a few hours today should see all the parts prepped, ready to assemble.  This one will be queen size and a challenge to finish on my Bernina, but hope springs eternal.

I made a pastel quilt for myself around 1990 and have been wanting a new one ever since.  So thank you Carol for such wonderful inspiration.

Good news for all gardeners, Tractor Supply is now carrying organic seed potatoes, as well as organic garlic.   If you can dig out your vehicle, hurry in and get yours before they run out.

I have about 1/2 yard of the bubble gum pink left.

Dolly is giving me the "I've no idea, but is it time for dinner" look.

Of course I get that a lot.

Corduroy road

 Sometimes being in a hurry produces interesting results.

Don't ask me how this happened. . .. you know how left brained I am when it comes to layout and construction.

Perhaps I needed more peanut butter.

The second streak of lightening top is a bit smaller.

Why does it have sawtooth edges you ask . . .  it will get trimmed square after quilting.

These 4 blue and light quilt tops came from one original project which had been semi-assembled, semi-dis-assembled, and finally all pieces, units and sections were folded into a container for another day.

Please don't tell me I'm the only one who does this.

There are a still few pieces  and rectangle units left and I'm considering handing them off to a friend to finish another top to donate.

Again, please don't tell me that I'm the only one who does this.  LOL

On the other hand, just think of all of the QOV tops that would get done if more people did this.

"Isn't it nice we're having weather."

as in, I'm not quite sure how to explain it.  First came the snow flurries that covered everything lightly all day long.

 Then blink, it mostly disappeared.  But as the sun was going down,

 Swoosh, in came a gale of snow covering everything.

 But not by very much.

 And tonight we're going down to 6 degrees.  Fahrenheit.  Brrrr

 The pellet stove has been turned up, however, it's having trouble reaching 55 degrees inside.

Good thing there are plenty of quilts to wrap up in.

Of course, Dolly has her fur coat.  But, even though this is her kind of weather, she would rather curl up behind my desk chair and snore.  

Thankfully, we did not get the ice storm that hit Tennessee and North Georgia.

Batten down the hatches, it's still winter.

This is the temp we woke up to Saturday morning, 28 and very windy.  Biting cold windy, if you know what I mean.

So we stayed in and finished sewing the second Honor Flight quilt top.  This brick quilt is big enough, so it won't need any borders.

 I threw in a couple reds for accents.  Appropriately themed of course.

Now the forecast for the rest of the week includes snow, rain, sleet and temps down in the teens.  Thus more wood pellets were required.  Every year, I forget that the local stores stop stocking them in January.  An unplanned road trip ensued Saturday night cutting into my sew time.  However, I think there's enough to see me through March now.

 After seeing this lovely idea over at the Country Sampler last week, I could not wait to try a variation.  My triangle units are 2".  The block is called Dove.

Just as soon as I can, I'll show photos of how these blocks are assembled.  I'm sticking to cinnamon pinks and reds.  Very soft, very feminine.

 Dolly is tucked in for her long winter's nap.

If you have to drive in this wintry mix, please carry emergency supplies.  Let's not forget what happened in last winter's January storm all around Atlanta.

Update.

 This pattern is called bricks.  Very simple.  Very masculine.

 It repeats at row 5.  Row 1 and 2 are reversed, light half rectangle at top or bottom.  Rows 3 and 4 are reversed, dark half rectangle at bottom or top.

Rectangles cut 2-1/2 x 4-1/2.  You can combine 4" lengths to make it as long as you desire.  Combine 2" measurement to create the width.  As wide as you'd like.

Do you remember this fabric?  I'm thinking 1994.

The layout for the 3rd top is almost complete. 

The days are getting longer, telling me the garden project must soon be started. 

Large blocks of sewing time will soon end.

Weekend recap.

Saturday . . . LOTS of ironing.

 Sunday, lots of ironing and sewing.

Streak of lightening pattern, for Honor Flight in May.  The first top is done.  The second is 1/3 assembled.

 These units are for the third; I'm changing the layout to a bars quilt.

There are many more pieces to assemble.  The goal is to get at least 4 tops done this week.

My original idea was to make a queen sized top. I nixed that and will make 4 tops around 50" x 60".

Rectangles measure 2-1/2" x 4- 1/2".

Do you have any sections / pieces / strips tucked away to make your own Honor Flight quilt?

We stayed up way too late last night.  Dolly is still recovering.

 All ironed and folded in their designated cabinet.

 Next up are the peaches, creams, browns and reds.

In 30 years, I've never had the opportunity to organize all solids in one location.

However, I've managed to play with them often.

There's nothing like bright solids on black to cheer up a wintry afternoon.

For all of those in the USA dealing with extensive snow, do stay home if you can.  It's safer that way.
