And Sew-On . . .

Whew, talk about a whirlwind week.

Several friends came for lasagna last Sunday.  You know your dinner party is a success when there's a lot of laughter and everyone has plenty to eat.

My mother's china has only been used 4 times since she gave it to me in 1986.  Now that I'm living in one place for years instead of months, and it's finally unpacked, I hope to use it more often.

The Christmas decorations were kept to a minimum.   Just enough to add splashes of color here and there.

An old Country Living magazine photo was the inspiration for my latest quilt.  Warm browns for the churn dash block, bordered by an even warmer red.  The background print is a shirting from Whittles.com.

Just need to add the borders  . . . .  still deciding what width they need to be.

Here's the block recipe:

2 warm brown 3-1/2" squares
2 background 3-1/2" squares.
(Layer, draw a diagonal line through the middle, sew on each side creating 4 triangle blocks.  Trim to 3")

2" x 13" piece of warm brown.
2-1/4" x 13" piece of background print.
Sew together down the 13" length.  Press the seam towards the dark side and cut into 4 - 3" long sections.

The background print needs to be wider on that unit so the block trims down more easily once assembled.

The center background square is cut at 3".

Sew skinny 1/4" seams throughout and you'll end up with a trimmed 8" square.

Red sashing strips are cut at 3".

This quilt works best with a variety of light, dark, and medium prints using one print for each block.  Add some with stripes for visual appeal.  Most importantly starch fabric heavily before cutting out your strips and squares.

Dolly and I would like to wish you all a very happy and sew-full New Year.

Until then, keep stitchin' . . .

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear

but a furry, floppy-eared bunny whose name is Buttons . . .

coming along to tell Santa what she wants this year.

Buttons knows she's not allowed in the house, but evidently could not resist a chance to see if Santa is truly real.

I got my wish early and actually set up my sewing machine last night.  It was put away when the carpet cleaners came and that was what, 5 months ago.  Horrors!

Currently working on this baggie project, simply because it was easy to find amongst all the reorganization.

Wagons Ho

For those of you asking about my wagon, it was made by Amish craftsman in Bird-In-Hand, PA.  Their work shop is in the middle of no-where so I can't give you directions, however, I do have the following:

Rolling Delight Wagons
2703 Stumptown Rd, Bird-In-Hand, PA
Phone:  717-656-4262

Dolly's wagon is model #1300.  I bought the high rails (as opposed to low) so it measures 33" high, 24" wide and 48" long.  It will hold 1,000 pounds.

There are several other models to choose from including heavy duty steel all purpose wagons, as well as 2 seater buckboard wagons for your pony to pull.

Wagon sides come in either red or green to match your Christmas decor.  And no, they are not cheap.  BUT, they are hand crafted, heavy duty and will last a lifetime when stored properly.

If you're interested and want to learn more, I would mail them a SASE and request a brochure that shows all of their models, along with a price sheet.

Or you can be adventuresome like me, stop by the workshop and see their samples first hand.

Yeah, the tree is up!

It's kinda tricky to get a photo that shows the red, white, and blue lights.  The ornaments are primarily hand-carved, hand-turned, hand-painted, or hand-made.  Of course there's a hand-crocheted stocking done by my mom.  I've collected for many years and often did not have a tree, as I was busy moving at the time.  So now it's a big celebration for me, even though it took most of Saturday to assemble.

The Christmas quilt was hung in the stairwell this year.

My new thread spool Santa by Carolyn Anderson.

The copper moose at the top was made by my friend Katrina.  The wooden spindle was turned by an area wood worker.

If you're in the neighborhood do stop in for a cup of tea and to admire the tree.  Who knows there may even be cookies.

John C. Campbell Folk School Fireside Sale

Yes another year has flown by and it's time to share pictures from today's show.

I'll wait while you make the popcorn . . .

Katrina Millers' famous copper sheep.  (One followed me home of course!)

Lee Davis's beautiful bowl.  This is Lee's last year of doing pottery, as he's retiring.

Can you see the pieces in the middle of the screen?  Those are seam rippers with beautiful hand-turned handles.  Truly lovely works of art that fit comfortably in your hand.  If you need the contact information for this South Carolina artist, just e-mail me.  I'm sure he'll ship.  His prices are very reasonable and they make lovely gifts.

We're making progress

Mr. Santa, a hand painted gourd by my friend Suzy has a place of honor in the toy box.

On Friday, I went to a small, family owned nursery in Georgia to pick up my tree.  Isn't it lovely!  It's also extremely heavy, so I unloaded it into a big plastic bin in the wagon and hauled it up the steps.  We'll plant it right after the New Year.
Two Christmas quilts are hung and ready.

And all the bins full of decorations are waiting to be unpacked.

Who knows maybe even the packages will be mailed on time this year.

Ten Minutes to Make, Tastes Like Heaven Chocolate Pie Recipe

Sorry, no handy pie pictures available.  But here's the recipe:

4 oz Baker's Sweet Chocolate
1/3 cup milk
2 tablespoons sugar
3 oz cream cheese, softened
8 oz Cool whip (low fat okay) (generic brand okay)
1 ready made chocolate cookie crumb pie shell

Heat chocolate and 2 tablespoons of the milk over low heat until melted.

In separate bowl beat sugar, cream cheese, remaining milk.  Add chocolate mixture.  Blend until smooth.

Fold in Cool Whip.

Pour into pie shell.  Freeze.

Let thaw 10 minutes before serving.

It always tastes like you spent hours in the kitchen.  Yummm.

I've located a blog

listed as TED blog where you can find up to date information on how to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

There are links to Web sites, Twitter handles, organizations collecting donations, and locations of where to volunteer.

Please keep in mind that even if the news reports are no longer covering most of the disaster, many are still without power.  Elderly are still in need of medicine.  Schools are still closed and families are in shelters.

If you've ever lived without hot water for even one day, you know something of what they are going through.

Pass the word.

Quilts are being collected for those who lost everything.

Several friends have asked if I knew of groups collecting quilts for the hurricane victims who lost everything.

Luana Rubin has information on her blog about this project.  I'm sure there are others in quilt guilds large and small across the country who are already working to provide comfort and support to those in need.

You may want to check with your local guild first, or coordinate your own sew-in.  Perhaps you can contact a storm shelter.  Check with your church to see if groups are going to affected areas to help clean up.

After the mismanagement of certain funding and resources not to mention the thievery that went on following Hurricane Katrina, I know you'll want to make sure whatever you donate goes directly to the person/family in need.  That's why I suggest finding a one-on-one contact.

If any non-quilters know of an immediate need of a family who lost everything within their community, feel free to contact the local quilt guild and let them know.

To all quilt guild leaders, if you know of a need, please blog about it so those coordinating efforts can contact you and assist.  We want to help.

Here is one link with a lot of information on various ways to help, volunteer, or donate:

A little help goes a long way.

You've all seen the pictures of houses in ruins along the Jersey shore.  Our fellow blogger Laura has put out a request for socks, hats, and mittens to be mailed right away.  She shares an address to mail them to.  Temperatures are dropping and folks who lost everything are in need.  Even a small mail pouch with a few pairs of socks will help, perhaps a package of new underwear.  I'm heading into town to talk with store managers to see if they can assist in any way.  Perhaps there are employees in your office who want to help.  Pass the word.

A friend of mine from NJ,

sent me this photo of Ortley Beach near Toms River.
There is now an inlet where a road/bridge used to be.

Click here for more photos of Ortley Beach:

Here is a link to a video with news updates.

As I understand it, the national guard is now delivering water and food to those stranded in NYC.   The elderly living in high rise buildings are especially susceptible, as they are unable to climb up and down stairs.

People are waiting in line for hours to get gas for their cars and their generators.  If they can't run their generators, there will be no heat.  However, electric crews from across the nation are working long hours to get power lines up and running.  God Bless America!

Please keep them all in your prayers.

Thoughts on Thursday

In checking the news over the last few days, so very many areas were affected by the storm that it's hard to get a grasp on the enormity of it.

Having lived in that area of the country, I am very much aware of how close houses are to each other, especially in the beach communities.  The damage is unbelievable.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by the storm.

Finally Friday

Here's a bit of fall color for you to enjoy, complements of the Old Country Store Museum.

I'm taking some time this weekend to work in the sewing room . . . finally.  Stacks of fabrics have been waiting for longer than I care to count, so starching and pressing are the order of the day.

Dolly and I will be busy kitting up pieces for a variety of projects to work on when the cold wind blows.

And speaking of cold wind, if you live on the east coast or know someone who does, keep a weather eye out.  There's a very big storm brewing.

Sensible shoes is not an oxymoron.

Colonial Williamsburg.  I understand costumes are supplied to their employees.  What fun to play dress up each day and talk about our nation's history.

I think it's especially wonderful for children, as costumes can be rented for them also.

Almost Wordless Wednesday

Some of you may recognize this one.
Either because you've been to the Old Country Store . . .
Or you have the older Fons and Porter book it's shown in.
Either way, it's a neat quilt.
