Dolly discovers watermelon . . .

and other news . . .

You may recall, this project was begun in Dec. 2008. (If you click on that post, assembly is outlined). The blue squares are 2-1/2" cut, setting triangles 5" squares cut diagonally, and the vertical blue strips are 3-1/2" cut.

I should have made it a bit longer. However, this is a nice size for a baby quilt and would work up well in pastels.

Remember when doing bar quilts, the 7 vertical strips must be cut on the lengthwise grain. To make assembly MUCH easier, starch everything before cutting each piece. You'll be glad you did.

The garden is growing slowly. We're expecting an abundant crop of cucumbers any day now. The plants grown from Ferry Morse seeds are doing far better than the cucumber plants I bought. There are more blooms from the FM seeds and they've grown faster.

I gave Dolly a chunk of watermelon rind just to see what she'd do. First it got a couple of nibbles just to check the texture and then she was off and running with it breaking into pieces all the way. We already know what she can do with a pumpkin - LOL

Thinking Thursday

Just 92 days until first frost. Not that I'm counting mind you. However, I do plan on moving my sewing machine to the front porch until ol' Jack shows up.

Lunch box social

Words from a book read long ago came to mind, as I layed out the newest log cabin.

The story revolves around a young lady whose beau was to bid on her boxed lunch at the town's lunch box social. A shoe box was filled with the young man's favorites and then decorated with paper and ribbons. All local young fellas of courting age got a chance to bid for the box, as well as sit with the lady who made it.

In all of my travels, I've only ever met one man who actually attended a lunch box social and got to sit with his future wife. Have you ever attended one? Are they still going on ? Will someone please mention this to Jan Karon so she can include it in her next book! Perhaps the idea, like quilting, will catch on.

The idea for my new quilt top actually arrived compliments of Lynn, who of course used wonderful plaids. Me, I'm using up the oddest and oldest fabric I can find in the hopes of depleting my 1-3/4" strip box(es).

And while I've been busy upstairs, guess who's been busy downstairs???

The old bag . . .

. . . gie, that held the seeds of this quilt dated back at least 14 years.

There was little left of the original background fabric, so I eventually gave myself permission to use a different light print.

The blocks trimmed up to 13-1/4 x 14-1/4, a large size, but 20 blocks make a nice size lap quilt.

Now I'm thinking about doing a piano key border . . . let's hope it won't take another 14 years.
